Congratulations to Dave & Deb of The Planet D!
This round of Travel Photography Roulette ended up with a record 28 entries and boy, did you make our jobs of selecting a winner extremely difficult! Any one of these photos would have been a worthy winner and it was incredibly tough separating them – so tough that we needed our friend Jenny of Where Is Jenny to provide an independent set of eyes as the two of us could not come to a unanimous decision!
With that said, this gorgeous photo made it into all of our top three selections. As Dave & Deb described it, “it is one of the most perfect beaches we have ever been on” and they’ve done a magnificent job of capturing that. This photo could easily be our desktop wallpaper or mounted on our living room wall as inspiration and as a result of this picture we’ve added Ko Lipe to our list of possible destinations on our round-the-world trip!
Thanks so much to everyone that entered this round! Dave & Deb will be hosting the next Travel Photography Roulette at http://www.theplanetd.com/. Make sure you check in to see what theme they choose!

This beach is on the small island of Ko Lipe in southern Thailand. We were here back in 2004 and not sure what it looks like now. It was a pretty “deserted” island then. In our opinion it is one of the most perfect beaches we have ever been on.

We were lucky enough to win Round 5 of Travel Photography Roulette at Over Yonderlust and as a result, we’re hosting the next round of this awesome series. #PhotoRoulette was started by Jeremy at Living The Dream and has so far been a great way for travelers to share their photos and experiences with the rest of the community.
Theme
Being Australian, we’re surrounded by water and some of the world’s best beaches. A lot of our travel plans have involved spending time at beautiful beaches around the world (it’s one of the best things to do in Bali) so it wasn’t that difficult for us to come up with a theme! So share with us anything to do with the beach – white sands, turquoise waters, palm trees, boats, fish, cliffs, people or anything else that was taken in and around the ocean.
Rules
The rules of the game are simple. The hosting blogger is the chosen winner of the previous week’s (7 days) game. The new host chooses a generic keyword or phrase that other bloggers submit photos to during the course of the week. Phrases can be as generic as ‘signs’ all the way to abstract thoughts like ‘religion’ and everything in between.
At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo that fits the chosen phrase and moves it to the top of the post as the winning entry with direction to the new host’s site for the next round. Readers can attempt to sway the author into picking a certain photo via comments but the author can ignore comments as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.
The following is a list of the previously played rounds of the game and the hosting blogger for each. This list also doubles as a winner’s table as each topic host won the preceding round! Click the host’s link to go directly to that entry to see some stunning photographs from the chosen term/phrase!
| Round | Date | Host | Term/Phrase |
| 1 | Nov 4-10, 2010 | Living the Dream | Animals |
| 2 | Nov 17-24, 2010 | Skinny Backpacker | Road Signs |
| 3 | Nov 29-Dec 6, 2010 | Dream a Little Dream | Street Art |
| 4 | Dec 8-Dec 15, 2010 | Flashpacker HQ | Festival |
| 5 | Dec 17-Dec 24, 2010 | Over Yonderlust | Landmarks |
| 6 | Dec 26, 2010-Jan 2, 2011 | Don’t Ever Look Back | Beaches |
For Round 6, we have chosen the term: beaches, and our photo submission is below. Those interested in playing please provide a hyperlink to a photo you’d like to submit and it will get hosted on this page. When submitting an image, please provide a brief description and location of where it was taken for captioning. On 3 January 2011 we will pick a winner and that blogger can start the next round.

White sand and palm trees at Bohol Beach Club, Philippines
So, who is ready to show off their photography skills? The best beach photo wins the week and bragging rights.
Extra Criteria to Keep in Mind When Submitting a Photo:
1) One submission per Blog (so sites that have 2+ authors only get one entry).
2) No photoshopping allowed unless specifically called for! Cropping and correction for red-eye or camera flaws are ok, however.
3) Abstract submissions welcomed as long as it fits within the interpretation of the chosen phrase. Remember, the hosting blogger chooses the winner, so if they cannot understand the submission, you might not win!
4) Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is ok to say focused things such as “monuments at night” in which most of us have pictures of.
6) Abstract thoughts are appreciated, but keep it within the realm that all readers will understand. No “Kafka-esque”, but “Overlooking Creation” is able to be interpreted by all.
7) No obscene pictures or phrases allowed. Suggestive phrases and photography can be accepted, but please keep it within reason.
8) After a sufficient period of time, phrases can be reused, however new photos must be submitted. Keep the ideas and photos fresh!
9) Pictures from your entire portfolio are fair to submit. You do not have to take the photo within the week of the contest period to submit it.
10) Most importantly, ALL PHOTOS MUST BE YOUR OWN.
Entries for the 6th round are the following:
Erica – Over Yonderlust

Pacific Coast Highway, California – This picture was taken during the most recent road trip we took of the Southwest/West Coast US. While it may not be white, sandy beaches, this rugged beauty can hold it’s own.
Lynda – live. travel. blog.

Overlooking Nassau, The Bahamas, as viewed from Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas. In all my travels, I had never seen such beautiful waters in my life so you could image the shock I had when I woke up this one particular morning after sailing over night and saw this out the window… I wanted to cry, but maintained my composure… I had friends around haha. Also love that you can see Atlantis in the background!
Magda – Destination World

Toruga Beach on Galapagos’ Santa Cruz Island. This is the most amazing beach I have ever seen. The sand is incredibly white, the water is incredibly blue and the iguanas are everywhere.
Sabina – Solo Female Traveler

This is the sunset over the Persian Gulf in Sharjah, UAE, which I took a few evenings ago. It’s very representational of this area of the world. The gas wells in the background always remind me of where I am, as if I could forget.
Bruce – 40 Plus Traveler
Amanda – A Dangerous Business

My submission comes from New Zealand. A friend and I went hiking along the coast at Island Bay (just outside of Wellington on New Zealand’s North Island) on a gorgeously clear August afternoon, where we saw this fisherman trying to catch something in the surf. If you look closely, you can see the snow-covered peaks of the Southern Alps all the way across the Cook Strait.
Andrew – Grounded Traveler

It is from Monterosso in the Cinque Terre, Italy. The Italian Riviera region of Liguria is known for sun and fashionable tourists. In March, though it is a bit stormy. I love the hills fading into the background under the clouds.
James – Great Vacation Retreats
Jaime – Breakaway Backpacker
During my stay in Oahu’ Hawaii I spent hours at Waimea Bay. It was my favorite beach on the island. It was crystal clear, white sand & clam waters. I also loved the cliff and jump off it about 10 times or more. It wasn’t until we made a detour on our way to the hotel that I got this shot. The entire beach, now you see its beauty.
Harrison – The Endless Terrain

My photo was taken on a lunch trip out in Ecola State Park, looking south towards Cannon Beach along the beautiful Oregon Coast. Great hiking trails and good surf for those brave enough to venture the freezing, cold water.
Lindsay – Traveller World Guide
Jeremy – Living the Dream

Overlooking a tiny island near Ko Tao, Thailand from a high viewpoint, the beach is nothing more than a sandbar that slowly appears as the day progresses and the tide pulls away.
Kirsty – No Place To Be
Dee – dreamalittledream.ca

It always great fun to people watch on the beach. Especially when you get to spot a bad case of the illusive hungry bum syndrome! I spotted this particular case on a beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Om nom nom…
Connie – Connvoyage
This photo was taken in Ko Phi Phi in Thailand. It was a “secret” cove that I got a peek at while hiking up to the viewpoint. GORGEOUS! I love how the foliage creates a frame for the ocean.

Tulum Beach at the Riviera Maya in Mexico. It’s a tiny beach, but surrounded by ancient Maya ruins and with this turquoise water and the white sand it feels magical!!

Ummm, does this photo need a comment? Y'all know you're jealous! :) Relaxing on a white sand beach & turquoise water in Cancun!
Lisa – Chicky Bus

Solitude & Reflection. I took it during an amazing sunset in San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua. It was a one-of-a-kind moment that I’ll never forget!
Nick – STRETCHD

This photo came from the blowhole beaches on the Cayman Islands. It’s quite an epic experience that’s very challenging to capture in a photo. By the way, I’m not the dude in the middle of it.
Aaron – Aaron’s Worldwide Adventures
Erin – Our Tasty Travels

This was taken from the beach on a private motu looking back at the main island of Bora Bora. This was just days after the big cyclone hit the area in February 2010 and destroyed a number of the otw huts. Thanks for submitting the first photo for this round Erica. The Pacific Coast Highway definitely is spectacular! Where abouts along Highway 1 was this photo taken?
Honestly I couldn’t tell you. I was taking a million pictures and didn’t even keep track of where we were!

Haha, I have so many great shots along that coast line, but really have no idea where abouts they were taken – got too camera happy snapping away as we drove making random last second swerves to the side to pull over!

Silly question I guess – nearly 450 miles and so much of which is picturesque! Might just have to take another journey along it next year.

Thanks for entering Sabina, nice shot! Sunsets are always pretty (don’t know why you’re doubting it!) and the skyline certainly adds another element to this photo.

Hey guys! I had a tough time choosing a picture to share here… I love beaches, so I have so many photos of them from all over the world! Since you guys are from Australia, I decided to leave those beaches out of the running (although you’re right — you guys have some amazing beaches there!).
