When we found out that this week’s #FriFotos theme was waterfalls, one destination immediately came to mind and we became very excited.
Iceland!
Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice, but it’s also the land of waterfalls and nearly everywhere you look there’s a waterfall to be seen. We visited most of the famous waterfalls that Iceland has to offer and are sharing some of them with you in this special edition of Photo Friday.
Gullfoss
If you only see one waterfall while you’re in Iceland, it will most likely be Gullfoss. Translated to the “Golden Falls”, Gullfoss is a popular tourist attraction on The Golden Circle and spectacularly plunges water down the three-step staircase into a crevice over 100 feet deep.
Skógafoss
Located in the south of Iceland, Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland measuring 82 feet wide and featuring a 200 foot drop from the top. You can see this waterfall from either the bottom or the top and if you visit on the right day, you’ll probably see a rainbow or even a double rainbow!
Hraunfossar
Hraunfossar, meaning “Lava Falls”, is the most obscure of the waterfalls we’ve listed here. But we thought it was awesome – Hraunfossar a series of waterfalls over the distance of about half a mile that flows through the lava rock and into a beautiful blue stream.
Seljalandsfoss
The waterfall in the right of this photo is Seljalandsfoss and you may think that it doesn’t look that special compared to the others. But there is one unique thing about this waterfall – you can walk right behind it! Now we think that’s pretty cool.

Hraunfossar looks really neat – very unique in how it looks like it’s just coming right out of the side of the hill.

It’s very cool seeing it stretch the distance it does flowing through the lava rock – and not far from that is another waterfall called Barnafoss!
