Trendy, stylish and sophisticated are three words that come to mind when describing the city of Reykjavik and one hotel that fits the mould is CenterHotel Thingholt which is where we stayed during our 9-night visit to Iceland.
Ideally located next to Reykjavik’s main shopping street, Laugavegur, Hotel Thingholt is close to restaurants, bars and within walking distance to Reykjavik Harbor and the offices of Iceland Excursions. Be warned though, the hotel is right across the street from the popular b5 bar and can get quite noisy on a Saturday night (but you’ll be out partying with the locals, right?).
The hotel oozes elegance as soon as you step through the big wooden door and walk down the stairs into their lobby/bar area. Designed by a leading Icelandic female architect, Thingholt is described as “ultra modern, yet classic, allowing natural materials and strong colours to take over.”
We arrived at Hotel Thingholt just before 9am and were allowed an early check-in and breakfast at the cost of 50 Euros. When you’re suffering from jetlag after an overnight flight, this is money well spent as we filled up on food before heading up to our room for a much-needed shower and some relaxation.
Both of us were immediately impressed after stepping foot into our beautifully designed room at Hotel Thingholt. Although cosy, it was the perfect size for a traveling couple like us with a comfortable double bed, separate doonas, adjustable heating and a white leather sofa.
The bathroom was equally as nice with a modern touch – a mixture of concrete and glass complete with heated floors for comfort.
Our only issue with such modern decor and fixtures was that it was quite confusing how to use some of the lights and getting the temperature correct in the shower. But these were just minor annoyances that we quickly overcame during our stay.
A buffet breakfast and wireless internet was included in the nightly price which is always a bonus! We also have to give huge credit to the front desk staff at Hotel Thingholt who were always extremely friendly and only too happy to help us whenever we needed it.
If you’re visiting Reykjavik and want a really nice and centrally located hotel then take a look at CenterHotel Thingholt. We loved our time there!
