Are you a zombie on your travels?

Are you a zombie on your travels?

This is a sponsored guest post by Maria Climent, a 26-year-old Catalan lady. After studying translation, she decided her life was odd enough to become a humor scriptwriter and by default, a blogger. This is how she’s now a mother of no-one and a better person. She also cooks her meals.

Last night I woke up in the middle of an uncomfortable dream. It’s interesting how much easier it is to dream about nonsense than to have a sweet pleasant dream. Our brains often seem to be preparing us for the worst. Anyway, my point is that when I woke up, I didn’t know where I was. I guess you know what I am talking about if you’re a traveler and changing beds every other day.

I had been traveling from one place to another for a while now – sleeping in trains, cars and even on the beach for a while. So when I woke up in one of the apartments in Rome I had rented with some friends, it took me a while before I realised which bed I was in. And then I just couldn’t fall asleep again that night, thinking of so many things we had done, how many things we still wanted to do and so on until seemingly 5 minutes later the alarm clock went off.

This may be not happen to everyone but I think it’s normal to be disoriented when you do this, especially when you don’t rest enough. And it’s a pity that this happens, as you want to be seeing new things and meeting new people and you cannot give 100% of you because you are so tired.

After doing some research, I found that there are some healthy things that we can do to improve our quality of sleep:

  • Doing some exercise during the day.
  • Avoiding caffeine at least 5 hours before going to bed.
  • Reading (preferably something boring).
  • Listening to some relaxing music.
  • Drinking warm milk before going to bed.
  • Get a massage (as long as you’re so lucky to have someone who would do that for you).
  • Sex helps too (you’re even luckier to have someone for that).
  • It’s not always easy when travelling, but try to sleep in a ventilated and dark place.
  • Think of nice thoughts before going to bed. Avoid thinking about your problems as it’s probably part of the reason why many times we have nightmares.
  • And finally, whether you are in those Rome apartments (as I was) or in a friend’s house, youth hostel, couchsurfing, or a 5-star hotel – if you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot fall asleep again, it’s better to get up, start doing something else (see the list above and get some ideas) and your body will ask you to rest sooner than if you stay in bed. This will rest your body but not your mind.

Personally I count numbers, it’s so damn boring and also helps not to think of anything. Hopefully this helps you as well!

Sweet dreams everyone!
