Don’t Ever Look Back vs. Traditional Chicago-Style Food

Don’t Ever Look Back vs. Traditional Chicago-Style Food

Chicago is one of many US cities we visited that was famous for its traditional foods and although these dishes may be partly responsible for us putting on weight, you can’t spend any time in Chi-Town without eating some Chicago-style deep dish pizza or a Chicago-style hot dog.

So we sampled these two favorites and here are our thoughts.

Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza

Chicago-Style Deep Dish Pizza

The Chicago-style deep dish pizza was invented at Pizzeria Uno in 1943 and is made with a thick crust and copious amounts of cheese and sauce. This put Chicago on the pizza map and considering our love for pizza, it was the first traditional food we wanted to try while in the Windy City.

We took on the Chicago-style deep dish pizza on two occasions (Lou Malnati’s and Giordano) but couldn’t finish it either time – it was just way too cheesy and filling! Kieron’s best effort was 3 slices at Giordano’s, which in our opinion was the best deep dish pizza in Chicago.

Our Opinion:

Kieron – After my first bite of Chicago-style deep dish pizza, I was in heaven! Pizza is one of my favorite foods and this was just awesome! However after just one slice I started to feel full and after three, I think I was ready to throw up. Deep dish pizza is something that I really enjoyed, but something that certainly needs to be eaten in moderation.

Amy – Deep dish pizza was just too much for me! It was way too cheesy, I ended up having to pull ball of cheese off the pizza and onto my plate just so that I could eat it. It’s definitely not my thing – give me thin-crust pizza any day!

Chicago-Style Hot Dog

Chicago-Style Hot Dog

A traditional charred Chicago-style hot dog comes with mustard, relish, onions, pickles, tomato, celery, salt and sport peppers in a poppy-seed bun.

We had our hot dog at The Wiener’s Circle in Lincoln Park, one of many places in Chicago famous for its Chicago-Style Hot Dogs. Visit here on a weekend night and you’ll see mutual abuse between staff and drunken customers which apparently is a lot of fun.

Our Opinion:

Kieron – A good hot dog that was made even better by the tasty fries that accompanied it! Really loved the relish and the flavor of the frankfurt – but still don’t understand how Americans can eat those pickle spears like that?!

Amy – I ate the majority of this without the toppings – it was okay, but when is a hot dog quality food? I loved the Dodger Dog over in Los Angeles and this was just below that I think. The fries served at The Wiener’s Circle tasted just like the one my mom makes and this was a big tick for me.
