Happy Second Birthday To Us!

Happy Second Birthday To Us!

Today we celebrate the second birthday of Don’t Ever Look Back and it’s amazing how much things can change in the space of twelve months.

A year ago we were writing our first birthday post from an apartment in New York City’s Upper West Side, about to hit Iceland and Europe for the first time. We knew that the end of our round-the-world trip was near, but we still had the unrealistic idea in our heads that we’d somehow be able to continue traveling indefinitely. If only money really did grow on trees!

These days we’re both back and working in our hometown of Melbourne, saving like crazy until that next door (whatever it might be!) opens up for the two of us. It’s a waiting game that we absolutely hate but what’s meant to be will always find a way and destiny will take us to where we are supposed to be in 2013.

The Year 2012 For Amy & Kieron

Although we haven’t been constantly traveling, we’ve been lucky enough to have some amazing adventures this year built around our heavy work schedule.

We’ve explored plenty of our own backyard, checking out the best of Tasmania and spending Amy’s 25th birthday overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The two of us have also spent a few days on luxurious Hamilton Island (including Whitehaven Beach) and visited some of Melbourne’s top attractions from the snowfields of Mount Buller to an AFL football game and the fantastic Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Oh and don’t forget the Havaianas Thong Challenge on Australia Day!

We were also lucky enough to venture back to South East Asia for a couple of weeks in August, spending time in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Langkawi.

Our accommodation on that trip was simply amazing with spectacular views of Kuala Lumpur, the most unique hotel we’ve ever stayed at as well as the most romantic one in Langkawi. We also checked out a $7,000 a night suite at the Marina Bay Sands but unfortunately that exceeded our budget just a little.

While in South East Asia we experienced some exciting things – we experimented with a variety of Singaporean street food and found the best Hainanese Chicken Rice in the country. We had Singapore Slings on the Flyer and an all-you-can eat dessert buffet. And when we weren’t eating or drinking, we faced our fears head-on aboard the Langkawi Cable Car.

So even though we’ve only spent approximately four weeks of 2012 traveling (compared to nearly six months of 2011), we’ve packed an absolute bucketload into those few weeks!

So What’s Next?

Drumroll, please. We’re finally able to reveal our next big adventure…

We’re going to the South Island of New Zealand!

Over the Christmas holidays we’ll be flying into Dunedin and spending a couple of weeks exploring the South Island. We don’t have any confirmed plans yet so if you’ve got some suggestions for us, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

In Closing…

We’re often asked what the best part of starting this blog two years ago is?

It’s YOU.

The amazing people we have connected with over the past 24 months are the reason that we’re still writing today. This was reaffirmed just last week when we caught up with some of Australia’s leading bloggers in Melbourne and realized what wonderful people there are in the travel community.

Bring on the next twelve months, whatever they may hold!
