At the beginning of December 2012, an adorable giraffe calf was born at the Orana Wildlife Park in Christchurch, New Zealand.
We were unaware of this when we ventured to Orana but as we approached the Rothschild’s giraffe habitat, the two of us stopped dead in our tracks and the same sound emanated from both of our mouths…
It was love at first sight when we spotted Harriett, just four weeks old at the time.
We were determined to find the best spot possible to get a better view of Harriett and when the two of us located the perfect position, we went a little nuts with our cameras.
Unfortunately Harriett couldn’t quite reach the feed basket like her adult counterparts so she had to eat what had fallen to the ground beneath. Adorable!
Talk about a photogenic creature! All of these photos obviously made Harriett very tired and she decided it was time to take a rest.
We returned a couple of hours later for giraffe feeding time and our new little friend was up and about once more, standing very close to her mother Tunu.
Unfortunately park visitors weren’t able to feed Harriett but it was still a memorable experience to be able to hand-feed the other giraffes at the Orana Wildlife Park. Best of all, this encounter takes place twice a day and is included in the price of admission.
Add in our unbelievable Lion Encounter and our day at Orana Wildlife Park is one that we’ll remember for a long, long time!
