Kieron’s Round-the-World Packing List

Kieron’s Round-the-World Packing List

For some reason, the two of us left the packing for our round-the-world trip until the very last minute. You would have thought we would have learned from previous trips not to make this mistake but fortunately it doesn’t look like we’ve forgotten anything major yet! What can we say? Packing for any kind of travel just isn’t our favorite thing in the world.

We did prepare packing lists weeks in advance and started buying things for our journey but that’s about as far as we got. The fact our first international destination is the USA contributed a lot to our procrastination – we know that we can top up our packs with the things we need for about half the price it would cost in Australia.

What we learned:

  • We had to keep telling ourselves that although we’re traveling for several months, we only need to pack for 1-2 weeks on the road. We’ll just have to do laundry on a regular basis so that we’ve got clean clothes to wear.
  • Packing cubes are essential when you’ve got limited space in your pack.
  • Anything forgotten is easily replaced when on the road!

Anyway, on with the list!

Clothes

Tops

  • T-Shirts (6)
  • Collared Shirts (2)
  • Tanktops (2)
  • Hooded Jumper (1)

Bottoms

  • Jeans
  • Gym Shorts
  • Board Shorts (2)
  • Denim Shorts
  • Black Shorts
  • Family Guy Pyjama Shorts – pretty cool, huh?
  • Underwear (9) – not pictured
  • Socks (4) – not pictured
  • Sunglasses – not pictured

Shoes

  • Running Shoes
  • Nike Sneakers
  • Thongs (or Flip-Flops/Slippers for anyone that’s not Australian!)

Technology

Being a freelance web designer, technology is an important part of my packing list. All of this is housed in a Lowepro Fastpak 250 backpack.

Technology

  • 15” Macbook Pro with Charger
  • HTC Desire with Charger
  • iPod Shuffle with Charger
  • Canon EOS 450D
  • 10-22mm Sigma Lens
  • 18-200mm Canon Lens
  • 50mm Lens
  • Kit Lens
  • GorillaPod
  • Memory Card Case with Spare Memory Cards
  • Camera Cleaning Equipment
  • LaCie Rugged 1TB External Hard Drive
  • Skype Headset
  • International Adapters x 3 (USA/Europe/Asia)
  • Double Adapter

The Rest

Since Amy worked in a pharmacy, she was responsible for the majority of our travel medications so some of our essentials might be missing from my list but will no doubt be on her’s.

The Rest

Medications

  • 6 months of Thyroid Medication (with cooler bag and icepack) – having to carry this around is a nightmare as it takes up so much space but unfortunately it is essential. I’ve got hypothyroidism after receiving a dose of radioactive iodine a few years ago and need to take these tablets on a daily basis.
  • Multivitamins
  • Motion Sickness Tablets
  • Hydralite Oral Rehydration Solution

Toiletries (in Clarins Bag)

  • Deodorant
  • Shaving Cream
  • Razor and Spare Cartridges
  • Ralph Polo Blue Cologne
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Piksters
  • Hair Wax
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip Balm

Paperwork

  • Passport
  • Spare Passport Photos
  • Photocopy of Passport
  • International Drivers License
  • Tickets/Hotel Confirmation Receipts/etc
  • Lonely Planet Guides – Las Vegas and New York

Miscellaneous

  • Spare Roll of Toilet Paper
  • Sharpie Pen
  • Notepad and Pens
  • Electrical Tape
  • All in One Tool (Screwdrivers/Knife/File/etc)
  • First Aid Kit
  • Business Cards
  • Insect Repellent
  • Mini Torch
  • Travel Clothesline
  • Travel Tissues
  • USB Car Charger

There are still a few things I need to pick up including a baseball cap and another pair of lightweight pants. My pack weighed in at 15.6kg, well underneath the 20kg limit that we’ll encounter on most flights and so far I don’t seem to have missed anything – definitely a good thing!

What do you think of my packing list? Am I missing anything important?
