Yesterday we featured Steph and Tony in our #rtwsoon interview series and they’re leaving today. As promised, we’ve got another interview for you with Claire of The Same Stars who is departing for India tomorrow!
We’re always happy to see when a long-term traveler includes Australia in their itinerary and we hope to see you in Melbourne soon Claire! Just between us, it’s the best city in the whole country… no bias whatsoever (obviously!) and we’ll be sure to bring the Tim Tams.
I’m the small blonde girl who is usually starting out of the window dreaming when she should be paying attention! I’ve spent the last 7 years living in the Midlands (which is much too far from the sea!) and working in universities.
Just before getting my first ‘proper’ job at the age of 22 I ran off to Australia and New Zealand for 6 weeks with my backpack and caught the travelling bug. Since then I’ve been on some awesome holidays including road tripping the Pacific Coast of the USA, camping in the Canadian Rockies and wandering around the souks in Marrakesh. I love to be near mountains or the sea and my favourite holiday spot in the UK is North Cornwall for the surf.
Where are you going on your RTW?
My first port of call is India – I’m spending 4 weeks travelling around Rajasthan, taking in the Taj Mahal, the temples at Pushkar and the Thar dessert in Jaisalmer. I’m meeting up with two friends in Delhi who are flying in from Johannesburg and Sydney respectively (I’m flying in from London) so it will be interesting to see how smoothly that goes!
After India I’m going to spend some time in Cyprus, which is where my parents have lived for the last 2 years. It’s a stunning little island, very pretty and with a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. I love scuba diving and I’m hoping to squeeze in the next part of my training, my PADI Rescue Diver, while I’m over there this time.
I expect funds will be getting low after all that so it’s off to Australia to get some work, but not before I’ve completed 2 weeks volunteering on a wildlife conservation project just outside of Sydney. I’m open minded about what type of work I get – anything from fruit picking to bar work to my ‘real world’ profession of marketing. As long as it keeps me in hostel beds, goon and Tim Tams I’ll be happy.
When are you leaving?
I’m leaving on 9th August which is terrifyingly soon! At the moment I can’t quite see how I’m going to get everything done in time but come what may, tomorrow afternoon I’ll be on the Tube en route to Heathrow, excited, scared and worrying about whether or not I’ve packed enough knickers!
Why did you decide to go on this trip?
In January this year my long-term relationship ended and I moved out of my home of 6 years and into a rented flat. I had literally no idea what came next – it was like all bets were suddenly off. I didn’t want to stay where I was living and simply try to recreate the life I had before – I wanted a change and an adventure so I decided that packing up my job and my flat and heading off was the way forwards. I love to meet new people and to experience new places and cultures so it seemed like a fairly natural choice, if a bit of a scary one!
What will you be doing to pass the time before your travels?
All the things that I should have done months ago! These include (but are not limited to) cancelling my contents insurance, reading my gas and electric meters, declaring my car off the road, and stashing all of my worldly goods in my friend’s garage. If all that wasn’t enough I’m also trying to squeeze in reading travel guides for India, writing poetry, getting another tattoo and teaching myself Greek.
If you could give just one piece of advice to a fellow #rtwsoon traveler, what would it be?
Keep your eyes on the prize! Preparing for this trip has involved a lot of hard work, stress and terrible hold music but I know that it will all be worth it in the end. When I’m chilling in the sun on dive boat in Cyprus, I won’t be remembering all of the phone calls to British Gas and the endless trips to the tip and the charity shop, I’ll only care that it all got done, and that I got on that plane!
