#rtwsoon Interview: Dave & Vicky – A Couple Travelers

One of the places in the world that we most want to visit is Japan and that’s why we’re extremely jealous of our latest #rtwsoon interviewees: Dave and Vicky of A Couple Travelers.

They’re starting their adventure with two weeks in Japan and that’s just the beginning with 393 days planned in Asia before heading up to Europe… wow!

Read on to find out more about this awesome couple and their plans.

Dave and Vicky enjoying a summer day in the outskirts of Washington DCWho are you?

We’re Dave and Vicky, two adventure travelers gearing up for a 2 year trip through Asia and Europe. We’ve been dating for about 5 years now (since high school on and off…currently on). We reside in Washington DC where Vicky works as an accountant and I work as a business analyst. We’ve traveled a decent amount individually and also together, like last year when we vacationed in Greece and drove all around the Peloponnese.

We started our blog at the end of 2011, but only “seriously” for the last few months, and throughout our trip we will be sharing our travel reflections, restaurant reviews, and resources for fellow bloggers. With Dave responsible for filming and technical work and Vicky responsible for photography and social media we will both be writing posts and providing different perspectives on our experiences.

Where are you going on your RTW?

Our trip is going to take us through almost every country in Asia (though not central Asia) and Europe. We had a difficult time making cuts because there are just so many places we want to see. Many bloggers who have read our routes think we’re crazy for the amount of planning we’ve done as well as the sheer number of countries we intend to visit. We are starting out in Japan in September 2012 before heading over to South Korea, China and then conquering South East Asia. To dodge the Asian summer monsoons we’ll hop over to Europe during the summer of 2013. To avoid yet another dreadful winter we will make our way back to Asia to trek up to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal and be mesmerized by the beauty of the Taj Mahal in India in December 2013. The exploration of Eastern Europe is set for spring 2014, that is, assuming we still have money. If you want to see our routes we have detailed our decisions for Asia and Europe in-depth on our website.

When are you leaving?

We have a one way flight to Osaka, Japan on September 15th.

Why did you decide to go on this trip?

With Vicky being born in Russia and living in Australia before moving to the US at the age of 9 the travel bug has always been there for her. For Dave it didn’t come until much later, a high school trip to Italy, studying abroad in Russia during college, and backpacking through Europe over spring break. By the time we graduated and moved down to DC to start work we knew we wanted travel to play a big part in our lives… eventually. So last year after spending 8 days in Greece and dropping about $4k we decided that it was not an efficient way to travel. We have a lot we want to see and do but working 9-5 doesn’t give us much time. Moreover it’s so much more expensive to travel that way. We decided to devote the next two years to traveling as much as we can.

What will you be doing to pass the time before your travels?

I wish this was even an option. We’re in mega planning mode so passing the time is NOT an issue. A lot of travelers we’ve spoken with tell us they just kind of “get up and go”. That’s not really our style. We’re planners, and with two years to plan as well as our regular jobs we’re more than busy enough to pass the time. We are moving our stuff out of DC to our parents houses in Massachusetts on September 7th so we have just under three weeks to get ourselves all packed up yet still make the most of the city and time with friends.

If you could give just one piece of advice to a fellow #rtwsoon traveler, what would it be?

If you haven’t connected with the blogging community do so! There are lots of groups on Facebook such as:

  • Travel Bloggers
  • Global Bloggers Network
  • 2012 Travel Bloggers Network

Where lots of travel bloggers are discussing very relevant topics. We’ve received a ton of advice from these groups/more experienced bloggers.
