Guess what? Another awesome #rtwsoon interview to inspire you, that’s what! This interview is with Mike and Ashley Lenzen of Traveled Earth, a married couple starting their round-the-world adventure in less than 8 weeks!
Mike and Ashley Lenzen. We are both from small-town Saskatchewan (that’s the flat part of Canada). Ashley is from Holdfast (a town of less than 200) and Mike is from Qu’Appelle (a bit bigger, close to the 650 mark). We met during university, but not at university, back in 2002. We fell in love, moved out to Qu’Appelle in 2005, and were married in 2007 by Chinese Elvis in our own backyard.
Mike is an engineer and Ashley is a high-school math teacher. Naturally, we’re ridiculously boring to many but uber cool to ourselves. For example, we dressed our cat as a rational approximation of pi (22/7) for Halloween. A drastic change from her regular moniker of Pi (short for Pythagoras, a double math whammy).
Together, we’ve traveled to Cuba (1 week), New Zealand (1 month), Yellowstone National Park (1 week), and the Yukon (1 month). Deductive reasoning tells us our RTW will last approximately 1 week
Where are you going on your RTW?
Who knows? If you do, you should let us know. Oh, and our families. Ashley’s mom really wants to know where we’ll be next February – if you could tell her, that would be awesome… she’s got to book her holidays soon.
In all seriousness, we’ve got a starting point… Cancun, Mexico. From there, we’ll bus through Belize on our way to Spanish classes in Guatemala. Then we’re thinking South America, but anything can happen given that our starting point changed the day we booked tickets.
We did put together a rough itinerary, however, which we have no intentions of following. But it looks pretty… ROYGBIV at its finest.
When are you leaving?
This one we know. July 6 at 6 am.
Why did you decide to go on this trip?
Good question… maybe we’ll write a post about that in the near future (wink, wink). We can give you the classic “why we’re going now” line… we’re young (although Mike’s borderline old), we have no kids, we’ve saved up a buttload of money and we want to.
What will you be doing to pass the time before your travels?
Work. And work. Move out of our house in the next 21 days and sell our stuff. Oh, and did I mention… work? We’ve also got a house party to throw before we move out, a wedding in Vegas in June, and five unemployed days to get everything in order before we step on the plane.
If you could give just one piece of advice to a fellow #rtwsoon traveler, what would it be?
Don’t get the oral typhoid vaccine. If you need a typhoid fever vaccine, take the shot. We have no idea if the shot is actually better, but the oral vaccine SUCKED. It needs to be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, you can’t eat for an hour after, and it makes you sick all day. Repeat that 4 times and you can see why one needle could be better.
