Snorkelling The Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling The Great Barrier Reef

After experiencing everything that Fantasea Reefworld had to offer, the time had finally come for us were to jump into the ocean and see the Great Barrier Reef up close for ourselves!

Life jackets for flotation? Check. Snorkel, mask and fins? Check. Stinger suits? Check. Our underwater cameras? Check.

Yep, we were kitted out and all ready to go!

We climbed down the stairs to Reefworld’s special snorkelling platform and after preparing our cameras, stepped off the platform and into the water.

The seas were quite rough and immediately we had to contend with some strong ocean currents but fortunately there were ropes and resting stations to keep us within the vicinity of the pontoon.

Amy and Kieron Snorkelling

The two are us are far from the best swimmers but these ropes and our life jackets made snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef a breeze! We stuck together and after getting settled in the water, it was time to start taking some photos of the action below the surface.

Snorkelling on Hardy Reef - Underwater Shot of Fish

The first thing we noticed was just how many fish were swimming around Hardy Reef!

We were in awe of the amazing colors that these tropical reef fish possessed and the two photos above were just a small taste of what we saw while we were snorkelling around.

Even when there were no fish around, the two of us were quite happy just to observe the beautiful coral reefs that have been formed over millions of years.

There was even a coral that looked like a brain!

We snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef for nearly an hour and probably would’ve gone back into the water if we had the time!

Our snorkelling experience was everything we had imagined it to be and can now definitively tick that off our bucket lists. There was only one real disappointment from our time snorkelling at Hardy Reef… as hard as we looked, we didn’t find Nemo! Next time we’ll find you Nemo, next time!

I LOVE the pink snorkeling suit! Looks like a great time – I hope to make it down under someday and check out the reef.

If you have to wear a stinger suit, best you pick one that looks good right? You definitely have to make it to Oz one day and check out the Reef and our home city of Melbourne too!

I agree with Liz, you are rockin’ the pink suit 🙂
I love all the different types of coral, especially the one that looks like brains.

Haha thanks Annette! The brain coral was really cool… we were a little surprised by how brown a lot of the coral was but apparently you need a special light to get all the colors to come out like they appear on all of those documentaries.

I LOVE the pink stinger suit! My brothers and I were small enough when we went to be able to wear funky kids suits, but I remember my parents in boring old black wetsuits – glad to see things have improved for adult sized people 😉 You’re making me want to do a quick jaunt up to QLD before I head overseas!

The stinger suits that Fantasea provided are probably the best around and there’s a variety of bright colors to choose from! If you have the time and money then a quick jaunt up to the Whitsundays would be highly recommended!

Jealous doesn’t even come close guys!

We’ve fallen in love with snorkelling since we started our travels and will definitely be paying a visit to the Great Barrier Reef while we’re in Australia!

You can’t go wrong snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef – probably the one of the world’s best places to do it.

Such an amazing experience! I have only snorkeled once in my life (in Puerto Rico), but it was something I hope to do again and again. I think the Great Barrier Reef would be the holy grail of any underwater adventures I might have, so I do hope to see it one day! Looks like the Fantasea pontoon was really cool, too. Can’t wait to hear about the helicopter ride!

Thanks for commenting Steph – we’ve snorkelled in Thailand, Hanauma Bay in Hawaii and now the Great Barrier Reef and think that the GBR wins! Hope you get to visit one day and we’re looking forward to sharing our helicopter adventure next week. 🙂

Your underwater photos are awesome – and I can imagine just a tip of the iceberg in terms of the experience your eyes were having! One of the most awesome things I have done too, and I can’t really swim! But with all the bits and pieces it was easy enough to get a good look anyway.

    Love the pink rafi!

Great shots – much better reef than poor Thailand – they are still recovering from the Tsunami
