Slovenia was the second country I visited when I left to travel and within seconds of arriving I had fallen in love with its capital city Ljubljana. It fast became my favourite city in Europe and a year later I still haven’t found one to match it – I love it so much that I even organised all of this years’ travel plans around me returning for my birthday. Ljubljana is my favourite city for so many reasons:
- It’s small. You can easily walk from one end of the Old Town to the other in under 20 minutes.
- It’s clean. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any litter during the times I’ve visited.
- It’s beautiful. This city is seriously gorgeous! You often feel like you’re walking around in a colourful fairytale.
- It’s not touristy. A city this awesome should be overrun with tourists, but every time I’ve been there (June/July time) the locals have far outnumbered the tourists.
This has to be one of my favourite photos I’ve ever taken! I was debating whether or not to bother climbing to the top of Ljubljana Castle but after four days of being lazy, I finally dragged myself up there for the sunset. Seeing the city gradually light up over the space of a couple of hours was truly breathtaking – and resulted in this gorgeous view!
This is my favourite building in Ljubljana – and not just because it’s bright pink! Well, maybe that has a little to do with it… The Franciscan Church, located in the middle of the main square, is one of the best places in the city to sit and people watch.
This is one of the main streets in the Old Town – I love wandering down here and admiring the different coloured buildings. This is one of my favourite places to sit and eat dinner of an evening.
Another sunset! After having such a successful night shooting the sunset from the castle, I decided to climb up the opposite side of the hill to see what it would look like from there. Whilst I managed to see this incredible sunset, I also managed to forget the directions back to my hostel! I ended up spending the next two hours walking around different car parks in the dark, terrified I was going to be spending the night outside!
Ljubljana has a great cafe culture and you could easily spend weeks here doing nothing but hopping from cafe to cafe all day! This was one of my favourite areas, full of cafes and bars lining the river, the view of the Ljubljana Castle overlooking the city and some of the best pizza I’ve ever had!
