The things we’re going to miss while traveling

The things we’re going to miss while traveling

We recently saw a post by Mike & Ashley of Traveled Earth about the things that they will miss the most as they set off on their round-the-world trip.

With our own journey so close to becoming a reality, it got us thinking about what the two of us will miss the most (and the things we’re not going to miss) while we’re away and we thought we should share them with you.

Amy is going to miss her own bed and pink fluffy gown.

What we’re going to miss

1. Family and friends.

This one is a given. We are both very close to our family and friends and it’s been quite difficult saying goodbye to many of them over the past few days. Fortunately for us there’s Skype, which will make the distance between us a whole lot easier (hopefully).

2. Sleeping in our own bed.

Let’s face it, there’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed. It’s comfy, it’s got the pillows just how we like them and it’s familiar and safe for us. Moving from bed to bed every few nights isn’t going to be the most fun and Amy is going to miss the routine of putting on her pink dressing gown every morning before getting ready for the day ahead.

3. Australian food.

We’re determined to try plenty of new foods on the road but we’ve got our Aussie favorites that we’re going to miss. Amy is desperately going to miss her preferred breakfast of Vegemite on Toast – but she’s determined to try and smuggle a tube of the stuff into her backpack. Other foods we’ll miss include Cadbury Chocolate and some of our favorite takeaway foods – charcoal chicken, fish and chips and Kieron’s meal of choice: a chicken parmigiana and chips.

4. AFL Football.

Being from Melbourne, we both love our Australian Rules Football – Kieron is a Tigers fan and Amy supports the Saints. Although our teams aren’t going so well in 2011, we’re going to miss being able to turn on the TV on a Friday or Saturday night and watch a game. We’re actually planning to be in New York City so that we can watch the AFL Grand Final somewhere live and party with a bunch of other Aussies. If you want to join us for an unbelievable experience on Friday September 30 in NYC, let us know!

5. Home-cooked meals.

Yep, another food one. It’s a big passion of ours! Anyway, making the sacrifice to live back at home for the past 7 months has meant we’ve been provided with delicious home-cooked meals on a regular basis. There’s nothing that beats a Sunday Roast. We’re drooling just thinking about it.

My Office

Kieron is not going to miss working a 9-5 job.

What we’re not going to miss

1. Working a 9-5 job.

It honestly feels like we’ve been working full-time forever so to have a break from the monotony of a 9-5 job is a fantastic feeling. We’re definitely not looking forward to returning back to employment in a hurry, that’s for sure.

2. Answering to someone else.

In the average person’s life, they’ve always got to answer to someone. Whether it’s their boss at work, the landlord or the bank, there’s someone holding them back. But the two of us now don’t have jobs, we don’t have debt or a truckload of possessions and most importantly we don’t have to answer to anyone else. We can come and go as we please – if we don’t like somewhere, we’ll pack up our bags and move onto the next destination.

3. Melbourne weather.

As we type this, today’s maximum temperature in Melbourne is 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Farenheit). Yeah, yeah, we know it’s not that cold compared to some places but the two of us live for summer and the beach. So to escape the cold and get to Waikiki Beach and the USA Summer is something we can’t wait to do.

This item will probably be on the list of things we’ll miss the most by the time we get to Europe and see our friends Facebook statuses of the warm weather at home, but we’re just as fickle as the weather itself.

4. Traffic.

Kieron was spending a minimum of 2 hours a day in traffic to get to work and Amy just over an hour. To do the sums – that’s equivalent to 15+ hours a week combined (or 32.5 days per year in our cars). It’s pretty easy to see why we’re looking forward to having a break from the roads – just look at the picture below.

Looking forward to avoiding the Monash Freeway traffic for a while!

5. 2-3 week vacations.

We’ve written previously about why fast-paced travel just isn’t our style and we’re certainly not going to miss the rushed 2-3 week vacations we’re become accustomed to over the past few years. Bring on slow travel and actually having time to relax and enjoy each destination!
