We’re taking the 1000-1000 Challenge

We’re taking the 1000-1000 Challenge

We’re following the lead of some of our favorite travel bloggers – Living The Dream, No Place To Be and A Dangerous Business – and joining the 1000-1000 Blog Challenge.

The challenge is to build Don’t Ever Look Back to the point where it earns $1000 USD per month and gets an average of 1000 visitors/day.

To put these goals into perspective, we only recently earned our first income through this blog and averaged a measly 22 visitors per day in December. Fortunately this number is rapidly growing – we had 43 visitors/day in the last week of December – but that’s not even 5% of the ultimate goal. Simply put, we’ve got a hell of a long way to go!

We would love to see some more of our fellow travel bloggers join the Travel Blog Challenge and together we can help each other reach this lofty goal. If you have some helpful tips to share on how we can generate more traffic or income, please share them in the comments below.

Thanks Todd – we’ve been quite stunned by the growth we’ve experienced since we launched just under 3 months ago. Hopefully we can keep growing at the same rate and we’ll reach that 1000-1000 mark in no time! 🙂

Good on joining the challenge! Your blog is already set on becoming a popular one from what I can tell! I’ll be looking forward to helping critique your homework assignments when they go in (busy at the moment, but I’m going to do the backlog of them next week for sure).

Hey guys, you can generate income through Nuffnang Australia… http://www.nuffnang.com.au Haha, it’s where I work. We’re a blogger community throughout Australia and also a blog advertising agency. We work in two ways… sponsored posts and banners ads. If you head over to my blog you will see that in the right hand column I have a Barossa Valley ad on there which is done through Nuffnang. We don’t just go putting any ads on blogs though, we match relevant ads to relevant blog content unless the blogger isn’t fussed having, for example, an iphone ad on their travel blog. Each blog is hand picked from our network and updated weekly so some weeks you’ll get them, some weeks you wont. Let me know if you want more info!

I think I’m going to join the challenge 🙂

Hey Lynda, I did sign up for Nuffnang but you guys really need some different ad sizes! None of them really fit my template design unfortunately!

It definitely sounds like a good idea though. How much does the average blog (i.e. ours) earn in any given week?

I’m leaning away from having ads (would prefer affiliate links and sponsored posts) but you might be able to sway me. 🙂

It’s awesome you’ve joined the challenge and hopefully we can grow both of our blogs together!

    • Posted January 3, 2011 at 9:54 pm | Permalink

Ah that’s a shame, they are apparently the standard sizes. I put the skyscraper ad in my side column as it was the smallest and best fit. Can’t really say the rates earned, but it is all dependent on blog views and varies depending on your traffic levels.

I can’t score sponsored posts for myself through work which sucks, but we don’t really get travel ones in which I guess makes it OK. Hoping I can score one through advertisers coming to me though 🙂

Can’t wait to see how both our blogs grow!

    • Posted January 3, 2011 at 10:07 pm | Permalink

300×250 or 125×125 are the sizes that we would love – the skyscraper does fit our right column but as a designer I am fussy about everything lining up perfectly haha.

I’ve added it to our single posts for now and will re-evaluate after a week or two whether I want to keep them there. Nothing to lose, hey? 🙂

Hehe good luck with getting a sponsored post, hopefully you can score one! We only recently published our first one which was very exciting, those first dollars in the bank made us start to think really seriously about this blog!

Way to o guys! You know, hearing more and more fellow bloggers signing up (especially some newbies) makes me really start to consider it… I’ll need to do some work but I may just join you guys!

Either way I’m supporting!! Good luck guys!

Thanks Annie, you definitely should join the challenge if you’re serious about improving your blog!

Even if you don’t end up getting to the final goal, pushing yourself to improve will generate positive results regardless! 🙂

Good luck guys! We’re about to hop on the 1000-1000 challenge as well. Nothing like some good ol’ support to get us going!

This sounds like something I’d love to join. Can you give more details about how you join? My goal is to one day make money off of my travel blog, though I don’t know how to go about it! Like you, I’d prefer not to post ads but instead have sponsored posts and links. If you don’t mind me asking… how did you make your first income off the blog? From ads? Anyway, I honestly believe you guys will get there. Your blog looks great and you already have lots of good content.

Hey Kim, you can find all the details you need here – http://www.travelblogchallenge.com/1000-1000-blog-challenge/

We’ve only sold one sponsored post through Don’t Ever Look Back and were approached by advertisers about it. Hopefully more will follow, but I think we need to build it up for a bit longer before we can start pitching to companies and get a few more opportunities through the blog.

Thanks for the nice words, hope to see you in the 1000-1000 challenge soon! 🙂

Hi guys – great stuff! – just discovered you through a tweet from Travel Dudes. A warning against sponsored posts though: I’m a professional travel writer so for us they’re a big no-no unless you establish very clear ethical guidelines and reserve the right to be critical of the company and their product in the post. If anything, ads keep everyone more honest – no strings. Sponsored posts can be deceptive. I also can’t tell you how many times travel co’s have come to us and asked us to use text and given us links to 3 or 4 blogs (high profile bloggers) where that *exact* same content is, that each blogger has presented as their own or as a ‘guest post’. Not good for credibility. Good luck with your challenge!

    • Posted January 10, 2011 at 10:50 pm | Permalink

So glad you found us Lara! At this stage of our blogging journey we’re open to all approaches from advertisers (it’s hard to say no to any sort of income when you’re just getting started), but we’ve decided to give full disclaimers whenever we’ve received any sort of benefit in exchange for a post.

We completely agree that it can harm credibility when bloggers don’t reveal paid posts – hopefully one day we’ll be able to move on to bigger and better things. 🙂

    Hi Guys
Am tempted to join the challenge but am struggling with my goggle analytics account. It tells me I’ve only had 4 visits since I set it up, when I’ve actually had hundreds! So I suspect I have a glitch somewhere to hunt down…that should keep me out of trouble this weekend!
